Gabriel-Chemie recently launched a near infrared (NIR) reflective masterbatch, which uses a special pigment formula to separate and recycle black or colored plastics.

The approved masterbatch for food contact can be extruded, blown or injection moulded or compressed, or laser marked. It is said that the products manufactured with this masterbatch have mechanical properties no less than those manufactured with carbon black substrates.

Diego Karpeles, the company's brand manager, said: "Our master batch solutions can be manufactured using ISO 9001, 14000 (environmental management), 22000 (food contact materials) and even 13485 (medical equipment) standards."

It is reported that since 2006, plastic recycling in the EU has increased by nearly 80%, while landfill disposal has decreased by 43%. However, so far, detection or sorting machines are still difficult to identify many black and non-ferrous plastic items.
